We will share similar characteristics and differences in several categories, so you know what to expect with either of the two breeds. You can then decide on the breed you want to welcome into your home through a detailed analysis.

Bernedoodle Vs. Havapoo Comparison

Before jumping into other details regarding personality characteristics, grooming, and other needs, it is important to know where both these breeds originate from. As you probably already know, both the Bernedoodle and Havapoo have a Poodle as a parent.

The Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog that is a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Standard Poodle, whereas a Havapoo originates from a cross between a Poodle and a Havanese. A fairly new breed, the Havapoo is a tiny, adorable dog that has recently captured the hearts of the public all over America.

The Bernedoodle, however, has been around a long time. A hybrid of two purebred dogs, it rarely ever sheds. Although experts believe no dog can be hypoallergic, one thing is for certain – a Bernedoodle is the closest to a hypoallergic puppy you will get.

With dogs originating from purebred parents, you can expect there to be a similar personality pattern in all offspring.

However, Bernedoodles have diverse and varying personalities. And when it comes to hybrid dogs, some may be relatively healthy, while others may come with health conditions. In the end, it all comes down to the kind of breeder you choose and if they maintain a health check on the parent breeds before breeding.

Appearance

Havapoos usually come with curly or wavy coats. But their exact appearance may vary depending on which of its gene – the Poodle or the Havanese is more dominant. Their coat is generally medium to long and comes in a variety of colors. These include white, grey, black, cream, brown, or red.

Havapoos are generally small dogs, with both male and female dogs weighing between seven to twenty pounds with a standard height of eight to fifteen inches. These numbers can differ depending on which of the parent breed is more dominant in your puppy.

Bernedoodles, however, comes in three sizes based on the mix of the following breeds:

  • Standard Doodle and Bernese Mountain Dog
  • Miniature Bernedoodle and Bernese Mountain Dog
  • Tiny Bernedoodle (Toy Poodle and Miniature Bernedoodle Parents)

All these three sizes come with long, floppy ears, innocent button eyes, and a triangle-shaped muzzle to die for! Bernedoodles also have a medium to long-sized coat that comes in several colors. These include black, white, and tri. Similar to the Bernese Mountain dog. Their coat may be curly or wavy.

Bernedoodles can weigh around ninety pounds with an average height of twenty-three to twenty-nine inches.

Temperament

Due to their poodle jeans, both breeds tend to have a similar temperament. Bernedooodles and Havapoos are two breeds that would provide you with their affection for life. They both tend to be intelligent, gentle, outgoing, and playful. Moreover, Havapoos and Bernedoodles are also easy dogs to train.

Both of these breeds are also kid-friendly. However, it is still not recommended to leave any breed with your children unattended for long periods.

Exercise & Grooming Needs

  • Exercise Needs

The Bernedoodle is particularly not a high-energy dog. It does not share the high energy and activeness of a Poodle but rather the calm and moderate energy of their other parent breed – the Bernese Mountain Dog.

When your Bernedoodle is a puppy, it is advised for it to get 15 minutes of exercise twice every day, whereas 30-60 minutes of exercise or playtime each day is sufficient for an adult Bernedoodle.

As for Havapoo, they also tend to be low-maintenance pups that also require up to 30-60 minutes of exercise every day. So, take some time out of your busy schedule to take your pooch for a long walk or play with them in the yard.

  • Grooming Needs

Grooming your dog is a vital element to their overall health and mental well-being. Regularly grooming your pet also assists in catching any underlying medical conditions on time while keeping them clean and free of germs and debris on their coats.

Havapoos and Bernedoodles need to be brushed two to three times a week to avoid tangles and mats in their gorgeous coats with nail trimming 1 to 4 times every month (ideally, it should be done every week), but if that is not something you can fit into your schedule weekly, ensure to trim your pooch’s nails 1 to 4 times every month.

Moreover, another important grooming activity for your pup includes bathing. A Bernedoodle and Havapoos both should be bathed every 3 to 4 weeks with professional grooming and a haircut every two to three months.

Remember not to ignore getting your pup’s coat trimmed timely as these breeds grow hair fast and do not shed frequently, leaving plenty of room for tangles to develop.

Health Issues

Like all dog breeds, Havapoos and Bernedoodles are also prone to certain medical conditions. And a pet parent needs to be aware of these medical conditions so timely measures can be taken.

The Havapoo, for example, is prone to the following medical conditions:

  • Deafness
  • Cataracts
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Patellar Luxation

Whereas the Bernedoodle is prone to the following health conditions:

  • Certain skin issues
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Certain eye conditions

However, most of these health conditions are treatable. And do not occur in every dog belonging to a certain breed.

Which One Is Right For You?

Since the Bernedoodle and Havapoo do not have any vast differences in their lifestyle, grooming, and other needs, we recommend getting either of the two breeds that you believe would make the perfect companion for you and your family. Both of these breeds have a gentle temper moderate energy and are a treat for kids to be around.
