So, What is Bernedoodle LifeSpan? As we know, the Bernedoodle is a result of the cross-breeding of a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle. This cross-breeding started in 2003, so this breed is somehow new to the people, and they don’t know much about it. Many popular Breeder believes this crossbreed is healthy compared to other crossbreeds and has a life expectancy of 12 to 18 years.
The Bernedoodle comes in different sizes, due to which the Bernedoodle life expectancy also varies depending upon their size.
The Bernedoodle has Three Primary Sizes
- (1) Standard.
- (2) Miniature.
- (3) Tiny.
Let’s talk about the life expectancy of all three Bernedoodle sizes.
The lifespan of Standard Bernedoodle
The standard Bernedoodle is obtained from the cross-breeding of a Bernese mountain dog and a Standard poodle. So the life span of a standard Bernedoodle depends upon the life span of Bernese mountain dog and the standard poodle.
When we talk about Bernese mountain dogs, it has a life span of 6 to 8 years, while the standard poodle life span is around 12 years. In the case of Bernedoodle, its life span mostly depends upon the poodle’s life span.
The standard Bernedoodle has a life span of 12 to 15 years in ideal circumstances.
The lifespan of Miniature Bernedoodle
The Miniature Bernedoodle is obtained from the cross-breeding of the Bernese mountain dog and the miniature poodle. The Bernese mountain dog life span is 6-8 years, and the Miniature poodle life span is around 15 years.
The Miniature Bernedoodle life span is also approximately 15 years depending upon the poodle life span.
Lifespan Tiny/Toy Bernedoodle
Tiny or toy is the same term used for the smallest Bernedoodle sizes. This is obtained from cross-breeding the Bernese mountain dog and the tiny poodle.
The Bernese mountain dog has a life span of 6 to 8 years, and the tiny poodle has a life span of 16 to 18 years.
The tiny Bernedoodle has a life span of around 18, so we say that the Bernedoodle life span mainly depends upon the life span of the poodle.
In rare cases, The Bernedoodle goes beyond the 20 years. Moreover, we have observed that when we move towards smaller sizes, the life span is increased.
Effect of different generations on Bernedoodle life span
We can also divide the Bernedoodle into different generations as the breeders don’t stop at the first generation of each size. They move forward and get different sizes in each generation. The breeders move forward and get the standard, Miniature, and tiny Bernedoodle in each generation.
To move forward on each generation, the breeders use different cross-breeders, which generally affect the life span of the Bernedoodle as well. There are mainly three generations F1, F1b, and F2 generation.
1. F1 Generation
In the F1 generation, the Bernese mountain dog is cross-breed with different sizes of poodles to obtain the different sizes of Bernedoodles. This generation has 50% traits from the Bernese mountain dog and 50% from the poodle. For the F1 generation, we have discussed deeply in the first heading with different sizes of Bernedoodle.
Let’s move to the second generation.
2. F1b Generation
F1b generation is obtained from the cross-breeding of Bernedoodle of the F1 generation and the poodle. So we can say it has 25% traits from the Bernese mountain dog and 75% from the poodle. As we know, the Bernedoodle from the F1 generation has a life span higher than the Bernese mountain dog.
The poodle also has a greater life span as compared to the Bernese mountain dog. So by the cross-breeding of two good life span dogs, we get a Bernedoodle with long life. Usually, the F1b generation has a greater life span as compared to the F1 generation.
3. F2 Generation
The F2 generation is obtained from the cross-breeding of two F1-generation Bernedoodles. So we can say that they are 50% poodle and 50% Bernese mountain dog. When we talk about the F1 Bernedoodle life span, both have a higher life span as compared to Bernese mountain dog and the poodle. The F2 generation has a greater life span as compared to F1 and F1b generation depending upon their parents.

How to buy a Perfect Bernedoodle with a long life span?
As we discussed above, the life span of a Bernedoodle mainly depends upon the different sizes and generations, and somehow on health issues. Generally, health issues are not common among the Bernedoodles because cross-breeding minimizes the chances of health issues which are facing by the Bernese mountain dog and the poodle. But there are rare chances of these diseases are still there. You can buy a perfect Bernedoodle by concentrating on some points.
We can’t judge the size of a Bernedoodle during their early age, so some new breeders don’t take care of that and give you a Bernedoodle with any size which directly affects the Bernedoodle life span. You should meet the Bernedoodle parents to judge the puppy size. The honest and experienced breeders always allow you to meet the Bernedoodle parents.
You must check the health certificates of the parents before buying the Bernedoodle puppy. The health certificates of the puppy give you an idea about the puppy’s health. You should also check the vaccination process of the puppy before buying.
Try to choose an experienced seller to buy a healthy Bernedoodle. Experience sellers take care of their puppies even after the purchase.
By concentrating on the above points, you can buy a smart, healthy, long lifespan Bernedoodle for your family.
Is the environment affect the Bernedoodle life span?
Yes, The Environment can play an essential role in the Bernedoodle life span. As we discussed above, the smaller Bernedoodle has a longer life span than a larger size because the smaller sizes are more energetic and fit than bigger ones. The bigger Bernedoodle is somehow lazy compared to smaller sizes and mostly likes to stay alone. But you can pay special attention to your bigger Bernedoodle and try to keep it busy in some activities. If your Bernedoodle stays maximum alone time and gets a depressed environment, it directly affects its life span. So try to give your Bernedoodle a happy atmosphere.
Moreover, take care of your Bernedoodle in a hotter environment. Bernedoodles are hybrid dogs and don’t like the warmer weather. They have a long hair coat which causes problems in hotter weather. Don’t over-exercise your dog in a warmer environment.
Is the feeding affect the Bernedoodle life span?
All the sizes of Bernedoodles need different amounts of calories to maintain their nutritional needs. The standard Bernedoodle needs 1400 to 1800 calories daily. If the standard Bernedoodle gets fewer calories, it affects its physical strength, which directly affects the standard Bernedoodle life span.
Similarly, Miniature Bernedoodle needed 750 to 1400 calories daily, and the tiny Bernedoodle required 400 to 900 calories daily. If they get fewer amounts of calories daily, it will affect their life span.
Do Exercise and Training affect the Bernedoodle life span?
Exercising and training are essential for your Bernedoodle physical strength and habits. The daily exercise keeps your Bernedoodle mentally fresh, which is necessary for your Bernedoodle longer life. When your Bernedoodle is mentally depressed, it will affect its whole health and behavior.
If you have trained your Bernedoodle for different purposes, the Bernedoodle will follow this training in his whole life. Although the training doesn’t directly affect the Bernedoodle life, it’s more like regular exercise for Bernedoodle.
